J-dorama: Hitonatsu no Papa e

I recently finished another Ueto Aya drama, this time an older drama called Hitonatsu no Papa e (Papa for One Summer). The first thing that almost scared me away was the quality of the videos, it's from 2003 and Japanese dramas and movies that old tend to look older than they actually are. So that was something I had to get used to, but it wasn't a big deal since it's an Ueto Aya drama.

A high school student's mother passes away leaving her alone with her grief. The girl, Marimo, discovers the name of a father she never knew. Marimo sets off to meet him, but is completely shocked when she finds someone very different from the father she envisioned. Her father, Shinpei, a 38-year-old would-be private detective, is shocked too, and doesn't believe her until he sees the paperwork. With Marimo muttering "The worst father in the world"and Shinpei lamenting the loss of his freedom, these two are about to learn how difficult and rewarding a father/daughter relationship can be. - TBS

Despite the fact that it looked very old and almost scared me away because of that, I was surprised of how good it actually was. It was fun to see an older version of some really great actors like Matsushige Yutaka, Kitamura Kazuki, Sawajiri Erika, Kohinata Fumiyo and of course Ueto Aya, even though some of them haven't changed a lot. Erika looks really different in this drama compared to how she looks in Taiyou no Uta and 1 Litre of Tears. But Hitonatsu no Papa e was her first drama and the other two are her latest so that's something I shouldn't be surprised of.

Since I knew most of the actors from other dramas I had pretty high expectations of this drama, and they managed to live up to them. The one who surprised me most was Kitamura Kazuki (Shinpei) who I've only seen in Akihabara@Deep before, where he plays a very weird role. His acting in Hitonatsu was great and with his looks it all felt very real, he really looks like a private detective. A funny thing I've realized is that Kohinata Fumiyo's roles are always pretty similar to each other, he's always somewhat shy, a bit weird and naive. I think it's partially because of his looks, he looks like a kind and funny person and he really looks like a stereotypical Japanese man.

One of the reasons why I like dramas so much is because they're almost always focusing on a small group of friends. I like that concept a lot because it's something I want to have myself, I'd like to have a small group of really close friends instead of having a lot of not so close friends. This drama is a perfect example of this concept as it's focusing on a group of close friends working in a pub, besides the actual story based on the immature father and his daughter of course.

Overall I think this was a good drama, it doesn't quite make it to my top 5 but it's definitely something I'd recommend. If you're a fan of Aya it's something you shouldn't miss, and you'll most definitely see someone you know from somewhere else. Good acting and good story so give it a try!

J-dorama: Lily

Lily is a mudra (music + drama) based on the song Lily by Monkey Majik. The interesting thing is that this is the first drama to be sold through iTunes.

The story is written by Yumiko Inoue and stars Toda Erika, who acts as a woman sending video letters to her ex-boyfriend, Yoshihiko Hosoda. The drama is about 20 minutes long and divided in 3 episodes, it can be bought for ¥400 on the Japanese iTunes store.

Of course this can only be bought from the Japanese iTunes store and without subtitles.

You can watch samples of all episodes on iTunes, click here to be redirected.

J-dorama: Haikei, Chichiue-sama

First off I'd just like to say that I'm sorry for not posting a lot lately. I have a lot of school work to do, since I'm graduating in 2 months. So I might not post as often as I usually do the next 2 weeks either.

However, I have some J-doramas to write about, so here goes!

Haikei Chichiue-sama banner

Set in an old prestigious Ryotei (Japanese-style restaurant) in a small town in the center of Tokyo, a young Itamae (cook for Japanese dishes) struggles his life, love and work while the long-lasted ryotei and the beloved old town face the change to survive the time. This heartwarming drama shows the intimate relationship of the community that has been lost nowadays, asks what the most important things in your life is, and tells how difficult it is to make a decision. The story is told in the form of a letter to his unknown father with lots of humor and love. - Fuji Creative

I've finished another Ninomiya Kazunari dorama, and this time it's Haikei, Chichiue-sama. I must say, Nino is an amazing actor and he might actually become my number one male actor soon, YamaPi still has it though. I'm waiting for team STORMY to finish subbing Marathon (a remake of the Korean movie, starring Nino), and I have high expectations of it since that's one of my favorite movies. In this dorama, Nino reminds me of the part he had in Yasashii Jikan. And I think he's just perfect for these kinds of characters.

When I first found out about this dorama I didn't really know what to expect. I didn't know much about the other main actors, so it was all up to Nino. But I shouldn't have worried about that, cause the other actors were really great. The ones I knew from before were Takahashi Katsumi and Kimura Tae, both from Yasashii Jikan and Matsushige Yutaka from Proposal Daisakusen (and Hitonatsu no Papa e, which I'm currently watching). I'm glad that I got to know Fukuda Saki and Kuroki Meisa (Meisa is smokin'!), I'll be looking for more of them from now on.

This dorama has a great mix of drama and comedy. I wouldn't put it under the comedy category, but it sure made me laugh at times. And best of all, it gave me the happy feeling.

Also worth to mention is that the soundtrack is simply stunning! I would definitely recommend this dorama, and I guess that's what I'm doing now. So what are you waiting for? Go watch it!

J-dorama: Shimokita Sundays

I didn't realize until now that I completely forgot to write about this drama when I finished it. I watched it a long time ago but today I got to think of something interesting. Even though people watch old doramas you don't see many writing about them. I.e. if I recommended an old dorama to a friend today, he probably wouldn't write about it after finishing it. I think that is kind of sad, cause if no one writes or continues to recommend old doramas, people who are new to it won't watch the good old stuff. So that's why I'm going to write about the doramas I've watched but not yet written about.

I'll start with Shimokita Sundays, another great Ueto Aya dorama.

This drama portraits the nostalgias of "the good old days" and youthful hopes and dreams.

Yuika Satonaka (Ueto) is a freshman in university who came to live in Tokyo to continue her studies. Although she had a brand new start before her eyes, she was somehow at a loss. Nothing seemed to interest her and her hopes and dreams were distant. One day at the school orientation, her eyes are glued at a sudden performance of a group of unsuccessful actors, “Shimokita Sundays”. Their unique play made her laugh… something she has forgotten for a long time. Yuika takes a chance to visit Shimokita and goes to see their play only to find how unpopular and how very few audiences they had. But still, their performance touches Yuika’s soul… great enough to make her try out for their audition. --TV Asahi

shimokita sundays banner
Who can get enough of Ueto Aya? Probably no one. I personally like her most when she plays an odd character, like in Attention Please where she's the lead singer in a band and has a cool punk-ish style. And in this dorama she plays one of those odd characters again. This time she goes from being a well-dressed girl who's serious about her education, to being a member of a group of unsuccessful actors, who's kind of poor, moneywise. She wears shabby clothes (not sure if shabby is the right word for it, it looks kind of like modern normal stylish clothing to me, maybe a little boyish. You'll have to decide that yourself.) and lives in a shabby small apartment. However, this is a view you don't see very often.

Shabby or "normal"? What do you think? The first picture is before she changed, obviously.

Shimokita Sundays is a very funny dorama. Aya's clumsiness and jokes are really funny, there's also two geeks who follow her around at her school who definitely will make you laugh out loud.

Other than Ueto Aya there aren't many actors I knew from before in this dorama. We have Sasaki Kuranosuke who I know from Yasashii Jikan and Summer Time Machine Blues. He's a good actor, can't say more than that cause I don't know him very well. Then we have Sada Mayumi who I know from Hana Yori Dango, or well, actually I know her from Shimokita Sundays since I watched that one first. The third actress I'd like to mention is Yamaguchi Sayaka who I don't know from any other doramas, but I can't wait to see her in Abarenbo Mama (a new Ueto Aya dorama). She really reminds me of Nakazawa Yuko (from Morning Musume), because of her mother like character but also her way of talking and acting.

J-dorama: Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu

sailor fuku to kikanjuu banner

High school student Hoshi Izumi (Nagasawa Masami) loses her father suddenly in an accident. One day, Sakuma (Tsutsumi Shinichi), the waka gashira of a small and weak Yakuza gang in Asakusa – the Medaka Gumi – pays Izumi a visit along with the gang members. The death of their former kumicho (Boss) puts Medaka Gumi on the verge of a breakup. Therefore, Sakuma begs Izumi, the former boss’s only distant relative left, to succeed to the kumicho position. Izumi is taken by surprise and keeps refusing at first. However, she ends up becoming the 8th kumicho of the Medaka Gumi!

The police tell her that her father’s death may possibly be a homicide case. There’s also Mayumi (Koizumi Kyoko), a mysterious woman staring closely at Izumi’s father’s photograph at his funeral. The situation becomes complicated when the drug-dealing vicious yakuza, Hamaguchi Gumi, comes into the picture as well as Sandaiji Hajime (Ogata Ken), a politician whose public stance is to eliminate drugs. --TBS

I just finished watching this dorama yesterday night. It's the fourth dorama I've seen starring Nagasawa Masami, that girl never disappoints me. This dorama is very short, only 7 episodes, but that's just good because if it was longer it would be full of meaningless content, probably. Maybe I've mentioned this before, but this is one of the reasons why I love Japanese dramas over American dramas. For example this dorama is based on a novel and the Japanese managed to make a 7 episode drama of it. If you gave the same novel to some American producer he/she would have made at least 20 episodes, and if it's very popular after the final episode they would've made another season, mostly to make more money. And that's one of the reasons why I like J-doramas so much.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Nagasawa Masami you should definitely watch this, she's really great in this dorama. The best part is the thoughts this dorama gives you, it made me think stuff like "just ****ing kill them!!". There's a lot of blood in this dorama though so I'm just warning you, and also some nudity, but it's not too bad.

J-dorama: Gal Circle

Gal Circle bannerFinally I have the time to write about this dorama! Uhm well, it's not like I didn't have the time a week ago but hey, I'm lazy.

Anyway where should I start...? There's a couple of really good actors in this dorama, we've got Fujiki Naohito who I know from 1 Litre of Tears and Proposal Daisakusen. He's a really good actor and in this one he's an honest and good cowboy from Arizona who needs to find a girl named Imoko, in the middle of Shibuya. And then of course we have Toda Erika who's a para-para dancer in the group Angel Hearts. As usual she's a bit bitchy in the beginning, I dunno why she ALWAYS get to play those characters, I'm starting to wonder if she's like that in real life, haha! Then we have Gakki (Yui Aragaki) who I mostly know for her singing, and also her part in Dragon Zakura. Gakki is super cute (or should I say hot) in this dorama, she's got a really cool style! Anyway she's a good actress, and she never disappoints me. And last and least (haha), our own little chibi, Yaguchi Mari! I must say, she really fits as a para-para dancer. Her acting was okay, nothing really special but definitely good enough for my taste. I should probably mention Iwasa Mayuko as well, I've only seen her in Hana Kimi before and she was really funny in it. Now I got to see her more serious acting as well, and she's a good actress too.

Fujiki Naohito in Gal Circle as Kitajima Shinnosuke the cowboyI would recommend this dorama to everyone, I had a great time watching this. These facts might be of interest:

Or you could just visit D-Addict's drama wiki, even though there's not much to read about it except from these facts. Anyway, how often do we see Gakki, Toda and Yaguchi in the same dorama? I mean... c'mon just watch it!

J-dorama: Proposal Daisakusen

Proposal Daisakusen banner

Iwase Ken and Yoshida Rei have been friends since elementary school. Ken, is obstinate and unskilled in love, but he fell long ago for the lively and cheerful, Rei. But Rei is about to get married to another man. While Ken and other friends from high-school attend the wedding ceremony, a fairy appears and sends Ken back in time, giving him a second chance to win the girl he loves.
So, I've just finished watching Proposal Daisakusen, another YamaPi / Masami drama. I liked it... though it wasn't as good as Nobuta wo Produce. Even though YamaPi was good and all in this drama he wasn't my favorite. For the first time I actually think he didn't do as good as some of the other actors, but I guess it was because of the character he played rather than bad acting. Hamada Gaku on the other hand never disappoints me, that guys is just hilarious! Masami was great, as expected, she played her part really well. Another girl I found out about in this drama is Eikura Nana. I really like her, she's a great actress so I'll definitely look for more from her. Overall I think this drama is good, it's not great but it's definitely worth watching. The first two episodes were kind of... slow, but it got better!

One thing I didn't expect to see (or hear) in this drama was a really great song by MONGOL 800, Chiisana Koi no Uta. I'll post a video with with it in the end of this post. Check their album "MESSAGE" out, good old punk rock!

Here's the correlation chart anyway:
Proposal Daisakusen correlation chartI have no idea why YamaPi's picture is animated...

I've been lazy on the dramas lately so I finished this one in 2 days! Well... I haven't just been lazy, I have a cold too so I've been bored to death.

Anyway, here's the MONGOL 800 video. I couldn't find a real PV, cause I don't think they have one so I'll go with a Proposal Daisakusen slideshow.

Later!

J-dorama: Hotelier

So I've just finished watching Hotelier, a Ueto Aya drama (which you should know if you've read my older posts!). So what should I say about it... It was definitely not as good as Attention Please, but that's one of my favorites so it's hard to beat it. Overall it was really good anyway, what I liked the most about it was that it made me happy most of the time cause Odagiri (Ueto Aya) and her co-workers had such a great working spirit and they were always smiling. The story was great, even though some stuff makes you go like "no way! that would never happen" afterwards, but that's pretty usual in doramas. The only ones I actually knew in this dorama before I started watching it was Aya, Nishida Naomi and Saeko, but of course since Aya is in it I didn't expect it to be anything but amazing. I liked this dorama a lot anyway and I'd recommend it to all Aya fans out there, and to every else too I guess.

It was a little short though, only 9 episodes so I felt like they rushed it a little, but that's just me probably. Here's the correlation chart anyway, maybe you'll find someone you know! (click to enlarge it)Hotelier correlation chart
So what's up next, let's see... Oh yeah, another YamaPi dorama! Proposal Daisakusen, I'll probably watch the first 2 episodes later tonight.

Anyway, I have to go make myself some tea now since I have a sore throat. Talk to you later!

J-dorama: Hana Kimi

Long time no see!
It's been a while since I last posted something here, what can I say... I've been busy doing other stuff, and I didn't have anything to write about either.

Hana Kimi banner with horikita maki
So I finished Hana Kimi recently! (the Japanese version of course)
What can I say about it... I mean, Horikitty, Toma and Shun in the same dorama, it can't fail! I really loved it! Horikitty was really awesome as always, it was more fun to watch her in this dorama than in Nobuta wo Produce though. Oh well, she's funny in both but in different ways ^^. Shun did good too but I just watched Stand Up!! so I was kind of used to the funny perverted Shun. Toma on the other hand did great! I loved his weird gestures xD! The other actors were great too, especially the guy who could read peoples auras! (the guy to the right in the picture below).

Hana Kimi snapshot
Most of you have probably already seen this dorama, but I recommend it to everyone who didn't yet!

So what else is there to talk about... My parents are going to Paris tomorrow so I'll be all alone until Monday night, that's pretty nice! ^^

Right now I'm watching Hotelier, I've only seen the first episode so far though but it seems great, it can't be bad since it's a Aya Ueto dorama!

Hotelier banner with Aya Ueto
I've started to study more Japanese now, I realized that because I were so lazy before I didn't feel well. That's two of my New Year's resolutions by the way, stop being lazy and study Japanese! Please give me your support, I might need it sometimes! (*^-^)

Well that's it for today, see you soon!

J-dorama: Stand Up!!

So, I finished another dorama, this time Stand Up!!
I had high expectations for this one and they were fulfilled!

Stand Up!! banner with nino, yamapi and ogurinStand Up!! is about 4 really perverted 17 year old guys who's trying to loose their virginity. The four boys (also called DB4 (Doutei Boys 4, or the four virgin boys) are the last virgins left at school and are desperate for sex. During the summer holidays a childhood friend comes to visit them, reason unknown at first but ends up in a great story.

Lots of familiar faces in this dorama, for me. There's YamaPi, Oguri Shun, Nino, Kato Takako, Becky and more ^^, all great actors/actresses!

Stand Up!! J-dorama with the four main charactersIt took some time to get used to Oguri Shun in this dorama, since I just watched Hana Yori Dango and he's totally different in this one. But he's really good, I was surprised to see him like this actually.

YamaPi's role is pretty normal, kind of like what you see in Kurosagi. He's a calm guy addicted to trains, but he's kind of a closet perv, lol. YamaPi never disappoints me though, but I'd like to see him in a role like in Nobuta wo Produce.

Nino (Ninomiya Kazunari) who I know from Yasashii Jikan surprised me just like Oguri Shun. I've only seen him acting in Yasashii Jikan so this was definitely something new to me, he's a really good actor.

Narimiya Hiroki, the fourth member of DB4, or should I say first since he's the one who founded the group, even though DB4 wasn't the name he gave the group :P. I've never seen him before, but I will watch more of his doramas cause he's totally awesome! He's super perverted xD I hope he has similar roles in other doramas.

Stand Up!! the four galsI recommend this to everyone, old or young doesn't matter. It's really funny and not just about perverted guys but it also features friendship problems, love triangles, hypocrisy of adults and much more!

Grab it from D-Addicts ^^

J-dorama: Akihabara@DEEP

Akihabara@DEEP bannerEverybody knows Akihabara, the district of Tokyo full of manga, anime, figurines, games and electronics. This dorama is about a company of 6 otakus called Akihabara@DEEP who's there to protect the inhabitants of Akihabara. @DEEP was formed by a girl called Yui through a website called Yui's Lifeguard, a site where Yui will help you with your personal problems.

The cast

Even if I don't have a lot to write about this dorama it's totally awesome! I promise you, you will laugh your ass off when seeing this, every episode made me laugh. It's definitely the weirdest dorama ever made, watch it!

J-dorama Winter 2008

A new year is here and there are many doramas to look forward to. Honey and Clover premiered today, I'm not going to watch it until it's finished and subbed though. Other doramas I'm looking forward to this year are these:

Binbou Danshi starring Shun Oguri and Yu Yamada
I've only read the short synopsis by Tokyograph but it sounds interesting. I've only seen Shun Oguri in Hana Yori Dango as a rich guy, this time he's poor and takes on other peoples debts.

Mirai Koushi Meguru starring Kyoko Fukada
This one sounds really interesting! Kyoko Fukada plays the English teacher Meguru Yoshida who discovers a special power which makes her able to see the people around as they look 20 years in the future. Might be really funny!

Cosplay Yurei Guren Onna starring Ai Takabe
Lots of teachers this year, this time Ai Takabe stars as the high school teacher Fumiyo Nabekura whose lack of friends is the result of a gloomy personality. Trying to find her purpose in life she dresses up at night as a fictional ghost and terrifies other people. Even though Ai Takabe isn't one of my favorites, she did good in Shimokita Sundays, of course with the help of Aya Ueto. It sounds good and she'll probably do a good job!

Edison no Haha starring Misaki Ito
A first-grade teacher discovers that one transfer student, considered to be a problem child, may actually be a prodigy.

I'm not so sure about this one but I like Misaki Ito from Densha Otoko so I have to give it a try, it might be very interesting.

One-Pound Gospel starring Kazuya Kamenashi and Meisa Kuroki
Kazuya Kamenashi as a boxer, I hope he's not too serious cause he's supposed to be the funny guy. It's a mixture of comedy, sports and romance and reading the rest of the synopsis gives me hope. Kazuya has no control over his appetite and that forces him to fight in a higher weight class which of course leads to a series of losses. Sounds like it could be fun after all!

I might also take a look at Atsuhime just because it stars Horikita Maki and Matsuda Shota.

I hope 2008 will be a great dorama year with lots of new discoveries! Read the rest of the winter 2008 drama previews from Tokyograph.

Other than these new and upcoming doramas I still have many old doramas to watch. I'm currently watching akihabara@DEEP and there's four doramas in my to watch list (Hana Kimi, Abarenbo Mama, Stand Up!! and Hotelier).

Abarenbo Mama banner

J-dorama: Yasashii Jikan

Yasashii Jikan coffee houseI just finished watching this dorama so now it's time to tell you what I think of it.

Since I just read the synopsis before watching this dorama I had no idea I'd see so many familiar faces. It started off with Terao Akira as Wakui Yukichi, one of the main characters. I don't remember where or when I first got to know Akira and I didn't like him at first. But after seeing him in various movies I now understand why he's so amazing. He's always been a great actor but after seeing this dorama there's another reason why I like him so much. He gives me calm, he may seem boring to others but to me it's really a pleasure to watch him act. In this dorama he acts as the master of a cafe called The Forest Clock in the northern parts of Hokkaido. After his wife died in a car accident caused by his son, Wakui Takuro, he moves to Hokkaido to live the life his wife always wanted. He couldn't forgive his son and left him, but what he doesn't know is that Takuro is living and working as a pottery apprentice just 50km away from him.
One day a young girl called Azusa (Nagasawa Masami), who's working at The Forest Clock bumps into Takuro at the mall when she accidentally breaks the shop's plates and cups. Takuro helps her carry her stuff to her car and they then exchange numbers, after that it doesn't take long before the two fall in love.

I was surprised the first time I saw this girl, I knew I had seen her somewhere else before. But I just couldn't remember where from. At first she reminded me of Horikita Maki, but that wasn't it, I knew I had seen her before. And when I finished the fifth episode I found out! The funny thing was that she was one of the main characters in a dorama (Dragon Zakura) I watched just about 2 weeks ago. Even though both of the doramas were filmed in 2005 she looks way younger in Yasashii Jikan. Nagasawa Masami is a really great actress and I can't wait to see another of her doramas!

The last familiar face in this dorama is Sasaki Kuranosuke, who I know from the Aya Ueto dorama Shimokita Sundays. Though I don't want to spoil anything so enough said.

If you're interested you can find the dorama at D-Addicts!

Merry Christmas and Taiyou no Uta

So finally Christmas 07 is over. I'm not gonna summarize the year yet though, I'll save that for the day after new year's eve.

Sawajiri Erika in Taiyou no UtaLet's see now... Last time I posted something related to J-dorama I talked about Dragon Zakura. Since then I've watched Taiyou no Uta and I'm on episode 3 of Yasashii Jikan. Taiyou no Uta was just awesome. Once again I was surprised by Erika's amazing acting, she's really something special. I don't know why she's so good acting sick though. Taiyou no Uta wasn't as touching as 1 Litre of Tears but it's definitely one of the best doramas I've watched, so I recommend it for everyone. This disease she has in Taiyou no Uta is really interesting anyway. After I finished watching it I went to Wikipedia to read about it but the information is kinda' limited. It's simple to understand most of it but there's many different types of it so I guess I have to do some more research to get to know it better!

Even though this dorama is somewhat like 1 Litre of Tears I didn't find it that sad. I found it more interesting (I didn't know about this disease before) and the actors in it made it really funny (especially Haruo (Hamada Gaku) made it really funny!). By the way, Erika is way cuter in this dorama :P.

This dorama I'm watching now, Yasashii Jikan, seems interesting. I have no idea what's gonna happen next, well I'm only at episode 3 anyway. I'll be back to write about it later!

That's it for now, Merry Christmas!
